Spanish Immersion Program

The Phoenixville Area School District offers a Spanish Immersion Program for students beginning in grade one.  Though the program is housed at Schuylkill Elementary School, students who would otherwise attend East Pikeland or Barkley Schools are eligible for admission.  Parents of students enrolled in kindergarten who are interested in having their children participate will have an opportunity to attend an informational session in March.

The following guidelines for students to be enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program will apply:

1.                   Interested parents/guardians of kindergarten students who are current residents must complete the District’s Spanish Immersion Program Enrollment Form by May 1.

2.                   In order to be eligible for admission to Spanish Immersion, the student must demonstrate proficiency on the district end of year math and reading assessments.

3.                   Students who are not native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency on the district ESL assessment.

4.                   Interested students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected for the program based on a lottery.  Special preference will not be made for siblings, nor be based on any other demographic category.

5.                   A waiting list of three students will be maintained with enrollment to occur by November 1, should a vacancy(ies) occur prior to November 1.

6.                   Enrollment in the Grade 1 Spanish Immersion Program will not exceed 25 students.

7.                   If class size in any grade of the Spanish Immersion Program is not in excess of 25 students, a resident student who has attended an immersion program from another district may be enrolled upon demonstrating proficiency in the District’s reading and math assessments.

8.                   Students will be discontinued in the Spanish Immersion Program if instruction in Spanish negatively impacts the student’s achievement in Mathematics, Social Studies, and/or Science.
