From The Reference Desk #43: More Than Books III

March 31, 2008

We dedicate this month’s column to children, young adults, travelers, and Friends (with a capital ‘F’).

Storytime is the highlight of many a child’s visit to Phoenixville Public Library.  These special times of stories, songs, activities and crafts are presented daily by Sandra Giannella, our new Director of Youth and Young Adult Services, and Michelle Covey, Storytime Coordinator.  There are separate programs for children ages 1, 2, 3, 3 to 5, and 4 to K.  Call the Children’s Library or visit our Web site for the full schedule of storytimes.

1-2-3 Play with Me” returns to Phoenixville Library to serve very young children (ages 1, 2, or 3, of course!) and their families.  The program is based on a concept called ‘Family Place Libraries’, whose goal is to help families connect to literacy, education, and family support programs.  Please e-mail sgiannella@ccls.org for more information.

The “Teen Corner” in the Library’s Carnegie Room is reserved for some very exclusive clientele – young adults.  And while they devour our collection of graphic novels, many teens will not shy away from heavier literary fare.

The Young Adult “Book to Movie” Club is their special program here, returning after a brief absence.  Upcoming books/movies are Phantom of the Opera and Clear and Present Danger.  The “Book to Movie” Club is sponsored by the Friends of the Phoenixville Public Library.  More on them below.

Reading books can take you on some fantastic journeys.  If you’re planning to do some actual traveling, however, Phoenixville Library is your passport to a great trip.  Yes, we accept passport applications, on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.  Appointments are required, and can be made by calling 610-933-3013, Ext. 32.  Daytime, evening, and weekend slots are available; call us or see our Website for the schedule of appointments.  For application forms and more information on required documentation and fees, visit the travel.state.gov Website.

Behind every great library, there is (or, at least, should be) a great Friends of the Library organization.  Phoenixville Library is fortunate to have such an active and supportive volunteer group.  The work of the Friends of the Phoenixville Public Library provides supplemental financial support to the Library’s budget through special activities and services.  One of these services is Friends Books.  Located on the lower level behind the Children’s Library, Friends Books sells ‘gently used’ books at reasonable prices.  Operating hours are posted on their door.

The Friends augment their proceeds twice a year with Spring and Fall Book Sales.  These multi-day events, held in our Community Room, showcase used books, videos, CDs and more for children and adults.  Real finds can be had, and bargains abound.  Mark your calendars – the Spring Sale is slated for April 3-6.

Donations of items for Friends Books or the Spring/Fall Book Sales are always accepted, with the exception of the month preceding a Book Sale.  Keep in mind that the Library does not accept magazines, textbooks, encyclopedia sets, Reader’s Digest condensed books, or anything in poor condition.

Something the Friends will always accept – new members!  Please call 610-933-3013, Ext. 26 to find out how you can join.
