2007-2008

April

Journalists: Mrs. Lamont’s fourth grade language arts class created magazines.  They each wrote a feature article and in small groups they put together very informative magazines.  They are wonderful!

Alex’s Lemonade Stand: The K-Kids participated in the Phoenixville Celebration of Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Saturday, April 5th  at K-Mart.  Many thanks to Mrs.Walker and Mrs. Charlesworth, the K-Kids advisors, for supervising the event.  All $375.00 raised went to Cancer Research in Alex’s memory.

A Day In the Life of a Colonial Soldier:  Many thanks to Mrs. Flossie Chapman for taking the leadership role in organizing Colonial Day for the fifth graders.  Many thanks to Mrs. Illig, Miss Parsons, Miss Valencia, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Hyrnko for their time and effort. Students got to learn about 18th century clothing and equipment, home chores for girls and boys, making fabric on an 18th century loom. Soldier songs of the American Revolution, march and drill, 18th century military medicine, officer’s training, military food and cooking, 18th century toys.  Students rotate to all activities.  This living history experience is sponsored by the dossiers from Valley Forge National Park. Many thanks to SSHA coordinator Kathy Powell for a great job and all the many parents who helped out. Thanks also to our SSHA for providing lunch and a donation to the VF group.  A very special thanks to Paulette Mark and her Valley Forge volunteers who make the Colonial Period come alive for our students.

PSSA:  Many thanks to Kristy Young, Jessica Kirk, and Kim Parsons who were the grade level teacher coordinators for the PSSA testing.  The scheduling, monitoring, and prep packets provided by all teachers insured a very well orchestrated administration.  Mrs. Susan Turner coordinated all the homeroom parents who provided snacks on a daily basis. Students had 6 days “homework free” evenings. Many thanks to all third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers for their support and efforts.

Family Night at Chuck E. Cheese: Many thanks to Mrs. Nicole Delson for organizing the Schuylkill School Night at Chuck E. Cheese in Devon, PA on April 8th. It was well attended.  The final head count and profit has not been released yet.

Photo Story: Mrs. Illig’s  LA class has used a new technology program – Photo Story - as a way to promote their research on a place they would like to visit.    Students researched a place of interest, then, using the writing process, they completed an organizer that persuaded people to visit their place.  Mrs. Mandell then helped students present the information, create a map from Mapmakers toolkit, and then narrate their slide show, while music played in the background.   We have some future employees for marketing!   You can view samples of the projects on Mrs. Mandell’s web site. Kudos to Mrs. Illig’s Language Arts Class and to Mrs. Illig/ Mrs. Mandell for integrating technology into the LA curriculum.

Blogs: Two students from Mrs. Illig’s LA class are taking part in a trial literature group using a blog with other fifth grade students in the district.  Fifth graders from all the buildings chatted online to find a book they all agreed to read, then taking various roles as the word finder and passage master, they have responded to each other using their blog.  It is not yet finished, but so far is labeled “awesome”!

Hollywood Production: Lights, camera, action! Miss Parsons’ 5th grade Social Studies class is making a movie. In conjunction with their study of the American Colonists and Colonial Day on April 11th  they have been using different search techniques on the internet to find pictures for their colonial topic. The topics included such things as clothing, toys, food and colonial medicine. On Colonial Day they were assigned the task of taking digital pictures of their research topic as it was presented by the volunteers from Valley Forge. They will be incorporating their pictures into Windows Movie Maker after which they will add music, text, special effects and credits. Look for their work on a small screen near you soon.
