SSHA COMMITTEES

 

 

ART GOES TO SCHOOL:  April Bradley

No art background necessary.  Get trained in the fall and then present to classrooms in the spring.

 

ASSEMBLIES:    Carl Flahaven

This committee schedules assemblies sponsored by SSHA that are presented during the school day.  Responsibilities include helping set up and break down the day of the assembly.  Time commitment is approximately 2 ½ hours per assembly.

AUTHOR’S DAY:    Heidi Smithson

This event is held once a year to showcase a published author and/or illustrator and to feature a mini-book fair.  During this event, the children have the opportunity to meet with our special guests while also receiving reinforcement from the teachers, reading specialists and Publishing Center to get excited about reading and creating their own books.  Responsibilities include decorating ahead of the event, processing book orders prior to the event and helping the day the author comes to Schuylkill.  Time commitment is dependent on the task but could be anywhere between 2-10 hours total.

 

Book Club:     Julie Cole

The Book Club is a chance for parents and teachers to work together to show students that READING IS FUN!  SSHA allocates funds to provide free books once per year for students to choose by grade and take home.  Volunteers work 1 hour shifts helping with distribution of books to students. 

BOOK FAIR:     Leslie Little & Mary Carney

This weeklong event is held twice yearly, in the spring and fall, and provides parents and children the opportunity to buy a wide variety of books.  Volunteers are needed to work 1 ½ hour shifts setting up, working the sale and breaking down.  (Day hours and some evening hours)

COMMUNICATION PACKETS:     Sonali Paul

Approximately 4-5 Volunteers needed to prepare communication packets sent home every Tuesday with students (one per family).  Responsibilities include assembling the information and sorting the packets per classroom.  Time commitment is approximately 2 hours once per week.

 

FAMILY FUN NIGHT: Nicole Delson

This committee organizes events that provide opportunities for students, parents, and teachers to meet one another and enjoy an evening of fun together.  Past activities have included Ice Cream Social, Bingo Night, Bowling, and Ice Skating Parties.  Time commitment is dependent upon the activity and number of volunteers.

FIELD DAY:  Open

Volunteers needed to assist the Physical Education staff in the set up of events, provide water for students, etc. 

 

FIELD DAY T-SHIRTS:     Dana  Bowdish

Volunteers are needed to assist with sorting t-shirts by size and distributing to each teacher.  Time commitment is dependent upon the number of volunteers.

5th GRADE END OF YEAR CELEBRATION:     Renee Stipa

Volunteers to assist lead Homeroom Parents with refreshments, decorations, music, invitations, responses and activities for the event.  Time commitment is dependent upon the activity and number of volunteers.

5TH GRADE GRADUATION:     Kathy Powell

Fourth grade parents are needed to provide food and decorations for the fifth grade graduation.  Time commitment is approximately 1 hour or less, one time at the end of the school year.

FUNDRAISING:     Andrea Bennick

Volunteers are needed to assist with distribution of orders from school sales.  We will have 1-2 main fundraisers per year.  Time commitment is approximately 2 hour shifts.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY:     Joy Thompson

This is a program hosted annually by the local Kiwanis for students and their grandparents (or “significant elders”).  Approximately 12 people are needed to assist the day of the event by being a greeter, handing out name tags, working the refreshment table and answering questions for the grandparents.  Time commitment is approximately 1-2 hour shifts during the period of 7:30 AM-12:00 PM. 

HANDBOOK: Nicole Delson 

Volunteers needed to assist with typing and preparation of the handbook.  Time commitment is dependent upon the number of volunteers.

 

HEALTH SCREENINGS:     Margy Greene 

Volunteers assist the nurse during physical, dental, hearing, and eye exams (held 2 to 3 times a year).  Only a small number of volunteers are needed for this committee.  Time commitment is approximately 2 hour shifts the day of the screening.

HELPING HANDS:     Cathy McErlean

This service committee was created to reach out to community members in need.  Opportunities to be a part of this rewarding project include helping with holiday food collection and distribution, as well as fundraising projects that have included “Glitter & Greens” and an Election Day Bake Sale.  Volunteers might also coordinate with local merchants to secure donations.  Time commitment is dependent upon the number of volunteers.

 

HOLIDAY SHOP:     Christine Tabarrini and Jessica Hadfield

In December, Schuylkill hosts a Holiday Bazaar providing a selection of inexpensive gifts for children to purchase for their families.  Volunteers are needed for 1 hour shifts to help the children shop.  The event lasts 5 days total.

HOMEROOM PARENTS:     Susan Turner

Festive Halloween, Winter Holiday, and Valentine’s Day parties are given in the late afternoon by the Homeroom Parents under the guidance of the teachers.  Responsibilities of the LEAD Homeroom Parent include coordinating the volunteers, activities and refreshments for each party.  There may also be additional requests for items during the school year as requested by the teacher such as 100th day of School, Cinco de Maya, chaperones for field trips and helping with Field Day activities.  4th and 5th grade Homeroom Parents could be tasked with additional responsibilities. Time commitment is organizational in nature in addition to participation at the various events as required.  Use of email is recommended for the Lead Homeroom Parents.   An organizational meeting for volunteers will be held in the fall.  (See also Teacher Helpers.)

HOSPITALITY:   Nicole Delson

Volunteers needed to help organize events, provide food etc. If you don’t have much time, but enjoy preparing dishes, this is a great way to help. Volunteers from this list will be asked to help at the Teacher’s Luncheon and Grandparents’ Day.  Time commitment is minimal.

 

LABEL COLLECTION:     Jen Olivas

SSHA families collect Redner’s and Phoenixville Acme receipts, General Mills box tops, A-Plus labels from Tyson products, and Campbell’s labels.  We also have Genuardi’s, Redner’s, and Target in-store registrations to raise funds for our school.  Volunteers are needed to help collect, count, bundle and label the receipts, labels and/or box tops.  Time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours per month.

LANDSCAPING:     Rebekah Bowser

This committee contributes to the beautification of our school through plantings and other outdoor projects.  Time commitment is approximately 1 hour per month but could be more dependent on the project/season.

LIBRARY HELPERS:     Contact Mrs. Brodar

Our school librarian, Mrs. Brodar, needs volunteers to keep our library operating efficiently!  Opportunities to help include checking out books, mending books, shelving books and some light computer work.  This can be done on a weekly basis or as your schedule permits.

LIP SYNCH:  Christine Trafford, Michelle Caba and Jessica Vollmer

Volunteers are needed to help with refreshments and to coordinate the children on the night of the event.  Time commitment is dependent upon the number of volunteers.

 

MARKET DAY:     Heather Cogliano

Every month this successful fund-raiser offers a selection of top-quality, name-brand foods to school families and the community.  Monthly distribution will be held at Schuylkill Elementary.  The evening hours are a great opportunity for working parents to volunteer.  Volunteers are needed one day per month to unload the truck, set up the orders, double-check & pack orders, and assist new customers. 

 

MEMBERSHIP:     Lori Horgan

Collect all SSHA membership forms and coordinate with Handbook Chairperson for those members who wish to be included in the directory.  No volunteers are required.

 

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION:     Enid Casiano

This committee welcomes new families to our school at the New Student Orientation.  We need 1 parent per first grade teacher for this committee.  Time commitment is approximately 1 hour to take the family on a tour of the school.

NEWSLETTER:     Kathy Tezak

Preparation of the Schuylkill Scoop, our weekly newsletter.  No volunteers are required.

 

PICTURE DAY:     Enid Casiano

Volunteers escort children to and from their classrooms for class pictures as well as help ready students for picture taking.  We need 4 people for this committee two times per year.  Time commitment is approximately ½ day.

PUBLISHING CENTER: Heidi Lehning

SSHA provides each student with a unique opportunity to write, illustrate, and publish a hardbound book each year.  This fun, yearlong project combines the efforts of our student authors, teachers, and parent volunteers.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY - We will teach you!  This is a very rewarding program.  You should see the smiles on the student’s faces when they receive their completed books!

Volunteers are needed as follows: 

1) To meet every Wednesday morning during the school year from 9:30-11:30 AM to assemble the books.

2) To type books for their child’s class

3) To type books throughout the year for any class

All you need to help type is Microsoft Word, internet access and a printer.

READING HELPERS:     Contact Mrs. Yeager

Reading helpers are needed to assist the Reading Specialist with students who may need extra reading instruction.  If you can spare 1 hour a week, this is a very rewarding way to spend your time. 

SCHOOL STORE:     Tracey Demey and Joanne Siefer

SSHA sponsors a school store once per month during children’s lunch hours.  Volunteers help sell cool school supplies (pencils, folders, erasers, trappers, etc.).  Time commitment is approximately 2 hours, 11:30 AM-1:30 PM every third Thursday of the month throughout the school year.

 SPIRIT WEAR:     Dee Jowder

Parents and students will have an opportunity in the Fall to order select Schuylkill School clothing items such as sweatshirts, sweats, etc.  Volunteers are needed to help sort and distribute orders.  Time commitment will be approximately 2 hour shifts.

 

SPRING FAIR:     Christine Trafford & Lori Horgan

This festive fundraiser is held each May and has included games, activity booths, food, and terrific raffles.  MANY volunteers are needed, and because it’s held on a Saturday, it’s an easy event for working parents to volunteer.  It’s fun and easy to work a two hour shift AND STILL enjoy the fair with your family!  Families are encouraged to work a shift(s) at the Spring Fair or organize/“run” some aspect of the fair in May.

TEACHER LUNCHEON:     Joy Thompson

SSHA sponsors this luncheon each year in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week.  Volunteers are needed to provide food, help with set up and clean up.   Additional activities may be coordinated by the chairperson that will require assistance during the week.  Time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours.

TEACHER HELPERS:    Contact your child’s teacher

Throughout the year, parents are sometimes needed (in other than a Homeroom Parent capacity) to help teachers in the classrooms with special projects or workshops.  The amount of volunteer time varies with each project or class. 

UPDATE THE HOME AND SCHOOL DISPLAY CASE:  Lisa O’Neill

Volunteers are needed to update the Home and School display case outside the cafeteria periodically throughout the year.  This is a great opportunity to express your creativity.  Time commitment depends on the complexity of the display case design.

 

VOLUNTEERS:     Dee Jowder

If you have limited time but would still like to help in some way, please sign up for the general volunteer committee.  The list will be distributed to all committee heads to contact people as they need assistance.

 

WALKING CLUB:  Open

Volunteers needed Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch, 11:15-1:30 to help organize the children who walk during recess. 

   

YEARBOOK:     Nancy Griffith

Schuylkill’s yearbook is a wonderful pictorial record of the school year.  Everyone’s picture is included with their class page, and may also appear in candid scenes.  Volunteers are needed to take photos and help with the production, sale and distribution of this great keepsake.
