Why School Climate Matters

School climate is about more than how a school looks or operates — it’s about how people experience it. It reflects whether students feel safe, respected, supported, and connected to the adults and peers around them. It also reflects whether families feel welcomed, informed, and engaged in their child’s education.

When school climate is strong, students are more likely to attend regularly, participate in learning, build positive relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. Staff are better supported, and schools function as healthier, more connected communities. When there are challenges, understanding climate helps us identify them early and respond in meaningful ways.

At PASD, we use school climate data to listen more deeply and act more intentionally. It helps us move beyond assumptions and hear directly from students, staff, families, and community members about their lived experiences in our schools.

What is the PA Climate Survey?
The Pennsylvania Climate Survey is an online survey designed for students, staff, parents, and community members across Pennsylvania schools. It provides an opportunity for each group to share their perspective on the school environment and overall experience.
This survey collects important information that helps schools understand and improve climate in areas such as:
• Student support and relationships
• Social and emotional learning
• Safety and school climate
• Experiences with bullying and respect
• Feelings of belonging and connection
• Communication and trust within the school community

By gathering feedback from multiple perspectives, the survey helps PASD better understand what is working well and where improvements are needed.

How PASD Uses This Information
The data from the PA Climate Survey is one of the tools we use to guide school and district improvement efforts. It helps us identify patterns, strengths, and areas for growth across our schools.

This information is not just collected — it is reviewed, discussed, and used to inform decisions around student support, staff development, school practices, and long-term planning. Most importantly, it helps ensure that the voices of students, families, and staff are part of shaping the school experience.

The climate survey data for PASD will be shared and displayed below as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and building schools where every student feels a sense of belonging.
