This year Jenna Howell’s third grade class and Ben Long’s fifth grade class at Schuylkill Elementary have been getting together on a monthly basis to complete various service projects.  These projects have addressed various areas of need in the surrounding community.  On Thursday December 21st, the two classes got together for their Fleece Blanket Service Project.

For the Fleece Blanket Service Project, the classes collected fleece donations to make no-sew fleece blankets.  The classes worked together to make a total of 50 blankets to donate to Project Linus.   Project Linus works across all 50 states in order to "Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer

Avery Pietrzykowski, one of the third grade students in Mrs. Howell’s class, shared her thoughts on the project: “I think that this service project means a lot to the kids that are getting the blankets because if I was going through what they are I would feel really loved. Also making the blankets was so fun. It was hard at first but once you get the hang of it, it was bundles of fun. I think that every person that gets one of our 50 blankets will feel the love from everyone who helped. I think project Linus is a good charity because it not your usual charity. Usually a charity is with money but not Project Linus.  This charity is all about people making blankets to give hugs to those kids in need.”

Helena Stevenson and Megan Sakowski, two fifth graders in Mr. Long’s class, also shared their thoughts: “Project Linus was a very enjoyable project. This made us happy for the people we were making the blankets for. The people that got the blankets are probably very happy, and we are happy too. Together, we worked hard for kids that are sick and hurting. We hope to do more fun projects. We hope that these kids feel touched when they are given the blankets. We hope to do more kind things for others because that is the right thing to do. Further on, we hope these kids enjoy and love the kindness blankets. The project was fun, exciting, and touched the lives of kids!”

Overall, the Fleece Blanket Service Project was a huge success.  The two classes look forward to doing their next monthly service project to give back to the community!
