Homework Committee

sealThis year our school district community will be exploring Homework.  The PASD Board of School Directors has tasked the district administration with forming a committee to research the topic and to make a recommendation to the board for guidelines pertaining to homework.  To this end, a committee of 70 individuals made up of students, parents, teachers, counselors and administrators has been formed.  This committee will ultimately divide in the following manner:

• K-5 (Elementary)
• 6-8 (Middle School)
• 9-12 (High School)

The committee will focus on five essential questions posed by the board of school directors and will frame their work around these questions:

1. What is our understanding of what homework is?
2. What are we currently doing with homework?
3. What is best practice?
4. What does homework research tell us?
5. What are other school district doing with homework?

These five questions will guide the committees work.  The committee will make a recommendation to the board in May of this year.  ON a monthly basis this committee will examine all aspects of homework including but not limited to:

1. Types of homework
2. Duration of homework
3. Difficulty of homework
4. Purpose of homework
5. Skill areas
6. Degree of individualization
7. Student Choice
8. Completion of Deadline
8. Social context.

The Homework Committee represents a broad spectrum of students and community members, will meet monthly to further study the research on homework and to delve deeper into all aspects (positive and negative) of the assigning of homework.  The homework sub-committees will consider not only current research, but also particular needs as student move through the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Your feedback is always welcome! On this website, you will find relevant information and scholarly articles about homework, as well as brief summaries of the committee work to date.  Feel free to email the committee with your input at [email protected]

Your comments and questions will be brought to both the main Homework Committee as Committee as well as the grade-level sub-committees.
