What COVID-19 safety measures are in place in PASD schools?
Per our Health and Safety Plan, we have implemented the following in all buildings:
Masks are required regardless of immunization status
Physical distancing of at least 3' for all students while indoors
Increased ventilation and air filtration
Daily sanitizing of all classrooms
Frequent handwashing encouraged
All visitors must show proof of vaccination

Are masks required at all times indoors and outdoors?

Masks are required in all of our buildings at all times indoors, with the exception of breakfast/lunch.  This includes meetings/events which occur after school hours.  Masks are not required outside for recess, physical education classes, or sports.

Are there recommendations/requirements for the type of mask worn?

We are following the CDC's mask guidance:

  • Mask should include multiple layers of tightly woven, breathable fabric; single-layered fabric masks should not be worn.
  • Cloth masks should be made of a fabric that blocks light when held up to bright light source.
    • When it comes to fabric, the tightness of the weave is important. At a bare minimum, the weave should be tight enough that you do not see the outline of the individual fibers when you hold the material up to light. But tighter is better.
    • Thin fabrics that do not block light should not be worn.
  • A mask with a nose wire is preferrable to prevent leaking around the nose
  • Masks with have exhalation vents or other openings should not be worn.
  • Cloth masks and surgical masks allow CO2 escapes into the air through the mask when you breathe out or talk. CO2 molecules are small enough to easily pass through cloth and surgical mask material. This is in contrast to the virus that causes COVID-19 which is much larger than CO2, so cannot pass as easily through a properly designed and properly worn mask.

In addition to the appropriate fabric, ensure that all masks fit properly over nose and mouth, without gaps at sides of the face or nose.

What are the safety measures on school buses/vans?
Passengers and the driver must be masked at all times.
Windows must be lowered at least 2" at all times.
If the bus is equipped with ventilation fans, they are to be used at all times.
Buses are spray sanitized after each run.
All buses are equipped with video cameras.

Are all PASD employees vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus?
The vast majority of our employees are fully vaccinated.  Those who are not are required to have a weekly COVID test.

Does PASD offer testing for employees or students who are displaying COVID-19 symptoms?
If an employee or student feels ill prior to coming to school, we highly encourage they stay home and get a COVID-19 test from a healthcare provider.  If an employee or student develops symptoms during the school day, our nurses are able to administer a test.  No student would receive a test without parental permission.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms may be very mild and mimic allergies:  sore throat, sniffles, sneezing, coughing, red eyes.  Other symptoms include fever and fatigue.

What provisions are in place if a student is required to quarantine?
Teachers are posting all assignments on Canvas so students can access from home.  If a student will be on quarantine for an extended time period, PASD will provide a tutor who will work virtually with the student.

What are the guidelines regarding how long a student must quarantine?
We are following the recommendations/guidance of the Chester County Health Department.  Click here for a flowchart outlining their recommendations.
