Homework Guidelines During Virtual Learning

Recognizing the circumstances of virtual learning from home, and all the challenges that come with it, below are guidelines set for homework for the duration that PASD is in session virtually.

Elementary Level
Students are to complete Canvas learning activities from the day.
Homework will not be assigned in addition to the daytime Canvas work.
We encourage students to read a book and get outside to play in the evenings.

Middle School Level
Core classes – Homework will only be given that is deemed essential.
Non-core classes- Homework should be completion of in-class activities/projects.  Additional homework is discouraged in non-core classes.

High School
Teachers have been instructed that any homework assigned should be kept to that which is deemed necessary for skills reinforcement. Work for its own sake should not be assigned to students, as consideration to the amount of time spent on the computer during the day is important. The only exception to this would be in areas such as Advanced Placement, where students may need to cover material outside of the classroom in order to be adequately prepared for the AP test in May.

Expectations for Students

Acquire new learning through rigorous instruction by being introduced to new topics, participating in critical thinking activities, problem-solving, etc.

Participate in engaging learning experiences that promote skill acquisition and application

• Take ownership of their learning with guidance, support and accountability from their teachers

Students are responsible for attending class daily and by period.

Students and parents should be aware that the Canvas Learning Management System allows for the teacher to “see” when a student has logged in.
º Teachers will verify attendance on a daily basis.
º Teachers will record attendance during the first 10 minutes of a class.
º In grades K-5 attendance will be recorded once per day.
º Secondary students (grades 6-12) will have their attendance recorded by period.

Absences should be reported to the school office – email notification is accepted – within three days of the absence - listing the reason for the absence. Excuse notes should be emailed to your student’s school building. In addition to the acceptable reasons for an excused absence as listed in our policy, COVID-related absences from school will be excused as long as an excuse note is submitted within three days of the absence listing the reason for the absence as it relates to COVID. COVID-related absences include:
º Parent work schedule
º Childcare issue
º COVID related illness of student or family member
